Arachova Greece

Arachova is a mountain town and former municipality in the western part of Boeotia, Greece, originally called Karyai (also spelled Caryae). Since the 2011 local government reform it has been a municipal unit, part of the municipality Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra. Its name is of South Slavic origin and means a place with walnut trees. It is a tourist destination thanks to its mountain setting, local traditions and its proximity to the town of Delphi. The town is a popular day or weekend trip from Attica and a gathering place for the rich and famous. Greek rebels under Georgios Karaiskakis defeated the Ottomans at the 1826 Battle of Arachova. Formaela cheese from Arachova has been granted protected designation of origin status. Near Arachova, modern ski facilities are popular with visitors. Although contemporary culture tends to overshadow regional folklore, the town keeps some local customs alive and showcases them during celebrations on 23 April, in honour of its patron Saint George. Arachova offers panoramic views, with small houses climbing the hillside and cobbled streets that reflect its picturesque architecture. In the town centre there is a huge, steep cliff topped by the Bell Tower, covered in dense ivy. At the top of the tower there is a large clock, 10 metres high. Arachova is also known for its black wine, its “brusque”, colourful textiles, carpets and rugs, as well as handicrafts and woodcarvings.
