Langhe Italy

The Langhe is a hilly region located south and east of the Tanaro River in the provinces of Cuneo and Asti in Piedmont, northern Italy. It is renowned for its wines, cheeses, and truffles—especially the white truffles of Alba. The rural landscape as it appeared in the first half of the 20th century is central to the works of writers Beppe Fenoglio and Cesare Pavese, who was born in Santo Stefano Belbo. On June 22, 2014, part of the Langhe was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its cultural landscapes, which are an outstanding living testimony to winegrowing and winemaking traditions refined over a long history and continually adapted up to the present day. The area showcases a complete social, rural, and urban system with sustainable economic structures and numerous harmonious buildings that reflect its history and professional practices. Its vineyards are a remarkable example of how people have shaped and adapted to their natural environment. After a long, gradual evolution of winegrowing expertise, grape varieties have been carefully matched to specific soils and microclimates, closely linked to advanced winemaking skills, making the region an international benchmark. The winegrowing landscape is also highly scenic, often seen as a classic model of European vineyard landscapes. Crutin cheese is produced in the Langhe. In geology, the Langhian Age of the Miocene Epoch is named after the Langhe region.
