Until just a couple of centuries ago, Odessa was nothing more than a formidable natural fortress that allowed the Turks to repel, four times, the assaults of the fearsome Cossacks sent by Catherine the Great. Fate would have it that, after years of unsuccessful sieges, it was a Spaniard, José de Ribas, who finally managed to capture this Ottoman stronghold at the head of the Russian imperial troops. The son of Barcelona had arrived in Saint Petersburg ten years earlier, at only 22, to join the Imperial Navy in search of glory and adventure. By then he had already achieved the rank of general, and the Tsarina entrusted him with command of her troops in one of the most difficult missions of the era: to take the fortress of Khadzhibey, until then considered unassailable.
