Until just a couple of centuries ago, Odessa was little more than a formidable natural fortress that allowed the Turks to repel, on four separate occasions, assaults by the fearsome Cossacks sent by Catherine the Great. In the end, after years of failed sieges, it was a Spaniard, José de Ribas, who finally managed to capture this Ottoman stronghold at the head of the Russian imperial troops. The native of Barcelona had arrived in Saint Petersburg ten years earlier, at just 22 years of age, to join the Imperial Navy in search of glory and adventure. By then he had risen to the rank of general, and the tsarina entrusted him with command of her troops in one of the most difficult missions of the time: to seize the fortress of Jadzibei, until then considered unassailable.
